MSDS & Spill Response
Newman Zone® is a food-grade emulsified vegetable oil (EVO); it contains no hazardous materials that would require an MSDS. To avoid confusion in the event of a spill, RNAS has chosen to produce an MSDS and to register the products with CHEMTREC.Although nontoxic, a release of Newman Zone® could have an adverse effect on surface-water quality ( BOD loading), similar to those of a release of a high fat dairy product or other high fat food product. As shipped the product has an opaque color, light yellow for the standard formulation or white for the non-ionic formulation. The product remains an emulsion when diluted with water by 100 times or more and retains its original color. Diluted Newman Zone® that enters surface water will be easily noticed by even the most casual of observers.
If the material is spilled, care should be taken to avoid discharge into sewers, storm sewers, or surface waters. The material is easily dispersed in water; floating booms and skimmers will likely be ineffective containment and recovery measures. The undiluted emusion may be recovered with absorbent pads or pigs, or recovered with a vacuum truck. Disposal will depend on local regulations. However, the emulsion is difficult to treat once it is diluted in water. In most cases, relatively inexpensive disposal options for food wastes are available, such as disposal to a waste water treatment facility or landfarming. Large amounts of dilute emulsion have been successfully disposed by spray irrigation.
